The Art of Logo Design
by Steve Long

I'm constantly amazed at what some companies use for a logo. It troubles me to see unimaginative and inappropriate designs being used out in the marketplace for all the public to see.

A logo is a tool which gives the first impression of a business. Before starting a business great consideration should be given to the design. The logo should be designed according to the name of the company and the business product.

A suitable logo is chosen before the launching of the business in the market. It is important that the logo is unique to the particular business, not just some generic, typecast logo.

The Design

A logo design should be eye catching and simple. It should use a simple color pattern and short text; it is unprofessional to make the logo unnecessarily flamboyant. Having a logo designed by a professional is a wise investment because designers have the knowledge to create logos befitting the business. It is also necessary that the company logo be innovative and distinctive.

There are also many types of logo design software. These are computer programs that are represented with a friendly user interface and help in generating logos according to the color and size specification of the business. I personally use the latest Adobe applications; Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign. Once a logo design is created it can be registered and copyrighted for the business it represents.

What to Avoid

The pattern of the logo design is very important. An eye catching design pattern indicates the professionalism and productivity. It should not appear cheap or showy. A business should avoid heavy decorations and different combinations of color in the logo design. The key to a good logo is simple color combinations and strong design that will instantly convey what your company is and does, to the customers.

Using the Logo

A company logo is a visual representation which gives a business a unique identity. Major emphasis is put on marketing and promotion of the business and the logo is used as a marketing tool.

Brochures

The corporate logo is an integral part of a company brochure. The company brochure is designed to promote and introduce company products and services. Whether it is a single page flyer, tri-fold or 12 page catalog your logo should be featured prominentlyon the cover and back cover to give the customer easy access to your contact information.
Collect and study brochures from other companies. What makes one design more appealing than another? You can develop your sense of good design by carefully studying other designs.

Voice / Audience. Who are you trying to reach with your information, and how do you want to come across to them?

Less is more. What is the purpose of your brochure? Use the 'Brochure Checklist' to decide what information is necessary, and arrange the components of your brochure in order of importance. The clearer you are about the order of importance within your information, the better your brochure will be.

Professional Designers

The corporate logo can be designed by hiring a graphic design professional. Designers are trained in creating all types of logo design for companies. The specification of the logo should be provided to the designers and the appropriate logo will be selected.

Software

Your designer will use graphics software tools to create an effective logo. The software is equipped with all the tools that allow a trained designer to custom build a corporate logo of quality.

Online

It is very important that corporate logos are created by companies who employ trained graphic designers that have established a good name in the market such as LongGraphics.

Image

In the business world, image is everything and first impressions count. An organization can make an impression and portray their business through a business logo of course. A business logo provides a company with a visual identity that is unique and represents your business to the world.

A logo can make or break a business. Take, for example, the McDonalds logo. All you need to see are the ‘golden arches’ and you know that a McDonalds is near by in the area. This is how any organization’s business logo should be, able to provide your company with instant recognition and simultaneously evoke feelings of trust, reliability and dependability.

No matter how much you spend on advertising and marketing d, it is your business’ logo that ultimately counts. A good logo acts as a sales representative, helps to sell your business and informs people about your business. It delivers a subliminal message to the world that your business is trustworthy and reputable and that you can offer customers what no one else can.
